Bengaluru's Transformation: Introducing the Greater Bengaluru Authority

Bengaluru, July 23: Many years have passed since Bengaluru, the dream city for millions, expanded beyond the four boundary towers built by Kempegowda. Once only four to five kilometers in circumference, Bengaluru has now grown to cover an area of 50-60 kilometers. The city’s scope is expanding day by day. To manage this growth, the government has introduced the idea of establishing the ‘Greater Bangalore Authority.’

The Brihat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike will henceforth be known as Greater Bangalore. The government has decided to give a new form and new administration to Bangalore, which is expanding day by day.

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, and the government has decided to present ‘The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024’ in the Assembly and Parishad.

What will Greater Bangalore look like?

Ramanagara and Kanakapura are proposed to be included in Bangalore. The Cabinet has approved splitting the existing BBMP into five parts and expanding it by adding new wards.

This will lead to the creation of the ‘Greater Bangalore Authority’ (GBA), replacing the BBMP. An area of about 1,400 square kilometers will come under the GBA, covering 1 to 10 corporations. These corporations will have an area of 950 square kilometers. The existing BBMP, which covers 708 square kilometers, will be dissolved.

The Greater Bangalore Authority will be chaired by the Chief Minister (CM), who will have the authority to manage the Greater Bangalore project and its finances.

Power has been decentralized at different levels within Greater Bangalore, with 5-10 City Corporations under its jurisdiction, all chaired by the CM.

Approximately 400 wards are likely to come under the Greater Bangalore Authority. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, BDA, and BESCOM will also come under the Greater Bangalore Authority.

Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) DK Shivakumar spoke about Greater Bangalore during the Channapatna by-election campaign. Ramanagara, Channapatna, and Kanakapura have all been added to Bangalore.

He had also requested the Chief Minister to rename Ramanagara district to Bangalore South District. The Greater Bangalore Authority received approval in the Cabinet meeting as part of this initiative.
