Bengaluru: The ‘Greater Bangalore Administration Bill-2024’, which pertains to the bifurcation of the Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation, will be referred to the Joint House Committee for scrutiny. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who oversees Bangalore, announced this decision in the Assembly on Thursday.

The bill, presented in the Assembly on Tuesday, proposed dividing the BBMP into a maximum of 10 metropolitan corporations. However, the opposition BJP strongly opposed this move. Despite all parties expressing their desire to discuss the bill, they were not given the opportunity. During Thursday’s proceedings, the DCM informed the Assembly about the decision to refer the bill to the Joint House Committee. At this juncture, Leader of Opposition R. Ashok, Member ST Somashekhar, and others demanded a special discussion on the bill. The city’s MLAs urged the formation of a committee comprising members of the Legislative Council (Parishad) to examine the proposal.

DCM Shivakumar agreed and said, “Ashok and Somashekhar should discuss this matter. Earlier, Satish Reddy, MLA from Bangalore, and Ramamurthy met me and raised some concerns.

We have no intention of rushing through this bill. I have also consulted with Ramalingareddy, K.J. George, Rizwan Arshad, and Krishnabairegowda on this issue. We have agreed to form a House committee to examine this matter further,” he stated.
