K-Ride Explores Integration of Circular Rail with Bengaluru Suburban Rail

Bengaluru Suburban Rail: In a move to enhance connectivity in Bengaluru, Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-Ride) has sought permission from South Western Railway to conduct a feasibility study on integrating the Circular Rail Project with the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). If implemented, this integration could transform the city’s transport system, linking the core with outer districts seamlessly.

A New Vision for Bengaluru’s Rail Network

The proposed integration aims to create a cohesive transportation system by complementing the suburban rail and metro networks. K-Ride plans to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) after the feasibility study, which will require approvals from both central and state governments.

  • Circular Rail: Envisaged as a 287 km loop, the Circular Rail will connect Bengaluru’s outskirts, including Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, Heelalige, Solur, and Nidavanda.
  • Suburban Rail: The existing 148 km Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project includes four corridors, linking key areas such as KSR Bengaluru City, Bengaluru Airport, Whitefield, and Rajanukunte.

Planned Connectivity and Integration

The Circular Rail will link various districts around Bengaluru with extensions planned for the suburban rail project. The Railway Ministry has allocated ₹7.2 crore for site inspections, underscoring the government’s commitment.

Circular Rail Sections:

  • Nidavanda to Doddaballapura: 40.9 km
  • Doddaballapura to Devanahalli: 28.5 km
  • Devanahalli to Malur: 46.5 km
  • Malur to Heelalige: 52 km
  • Heelalige to Hejjala: 42 km
  • Hejjala to Solur: 43.5 km
  • Solur to Nidavanda: 34.2 km

Phase 2 Extensions for Suburban Rail:

  • Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur: 18 km
  • Chikkabanavara to Kunigal: 50 km
  • Chikkabanavara to Dabaspet: 36 km
  • Kengeri to Hejjala: 11 km
  • Heelalige to Anekal Road: 11 km
  • Rajanukunte to Vaderahalli: 20 km

Current Progress on Suburban Rail

The ongoing Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project spans four corridors totaling 148 km:

  1. Sampige Line (41.4 km): Connecting KSR Bengaluru City to Bengaluru Airport and Devanahalli.
  2. Mallige Line (25 km): Connecting Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara.
  3. Parijatha Line (35.5 km): Linking Kengeri to Whitefield.
  4. Heelalige to Rajanukunte Line (46.25 km).

The integration of Circular Rail with the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project represents a significant leap forward for Bengaluru’s transportation system. With approvals pending and plans advancing, residents can look forward to a more connected and accessible city shortly.
