Bengaluru Faces Multiple Price Hikes at the Start of 2025
Bengaluru, January 3: The start of the new year has brought a wave of price hikes for residents in Karnataka’s capital city. Following the recent bus fare increase by KSRTC and BMTC, the government is now preparing to implement hikes in metro ticket fares, milk prices, water tariffs, and electricity charges. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the upcoming revisions.
Water Tariff Hike in Bengaluru
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced plans to revise water tariffs for the first time since 2014. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is set to discuss the proposal with MLAs in a meeting scheduled for mid-January. BWSSB cites increased electricity costs for water supply as a key reason for the revision, which is expected to gain approval during the upcoming discussions. The proposal has already received backing from 27 MLAs, indicating a high likelihood of implementation.
City residents, already grappling with rising costs, express concerns about the impact of this hike, particularly on salaried households.
Metro Fare Hike Expected in January
With over 9 lakh daily commuters, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro plans to raise ticket prices by 15% to offset increasing operational costs. The proposed hike will be discussed during the BMRCL board meeting in mid-January. If approved, the minimum fare will rise from ā¹10 to ā¹15, and the maximum fare from ā¹60 to ā¹75.
While public objections were invited during October 2024, the fare-fixing committee has decided to proceed with the hike, emphasizing the need for financial sustainability.

Milk Prices to Go Up by ā¹5 Per Litre
The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has proposed a ā¹5 per litre increase for Nandini milk, citing support for farmers as a primary reason. This marks the second hike within six months, with KMF President L. Bhima Naik confirms the move is aimed at boosting farm-level profitability. The price revision is expected to take effect soon.
Electricity Tariff Hike Over Three Years
All electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) in Karnataka, including BESCOM, have submitted proposals to the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to raise tariffs for the next three years. The proposed hikes include:
- ā¹0.67 per unit in 2025-26
- ā¹0.75 per unit in 2026-27
- ā¹0.91 per unit in 2027-28
BESCOM has reported a projected revenue shortfall of ā¹2,572.69 crore for 2025-26, emphasizing the necessity of the increase.
Bengaluru Residents Brace for Financial Strain
With bus fare hikes effective from January 5, the metro, milk, water, and electricity price hikes are expected to follow quickly. This series of increases has left Bengaluru residents concerned about managing escalating living expenses.
Stay tuned for further updates as these proposals move toward finalization.
