BBMP steps up Covid-19 testing efforts amid rising cases in Bangalore: targets 1,500 daily tests and prepares health facilities
BBMP steps up COVID-19 testing: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to increase the number of COVID-19 tests in the city after two people have died of COVID-19.
The state government has reportedly scheduled 1,500 tests per day in the BBMP region and Bengaluru city, where those who tested positive had only mild symptoms.
The latest data shared by private hospitals with the civic body said 59 people tested positive for Covid-19 between December 1 and 19. More people have been infected with the coronavirus in the past four days. More tests in private laboratories and hospitals may increase the number of infected people. BBMP is currently testing 350 to 400 people per day.
The cases are going to increase further
“As we test more people in the coming days, the number of Covid-19 cases is likely to increase. There is no need to panic as long as the patient does not have serious conditions. As per the reports we have received from the hospitals, the severity of the infection in the patients is moderate,” said BBMP Chief Health Officer (Public Health) Bala Sunder.
The BBMP reported two suspected Covid-19 deaths, one at a private hospital on Race Course Road and the other at Hebbal. Health officials said that the condition of the remaining two is critical and they are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of private hospitals.
Preparation of BBMP
The BBMP held its first meeting on Wednesday to ensure the operational readiness of all health facilities to deal with any possible COVID outbreak.
BBMP Special Commissioner (Health), B Shankar Babu said that 450 lab technicians, 350 qualified doctors, 2,000 oxygen concentrators, and other equipment are ready to carry out any tasks assigned by the government, including screening suspected patients.
We do 1,500 COVID tests every day. It will be free. But we don’t know if people with mild symptoms are willing to take the test. This is a worrying issue, he said. He said tests will be done at 144 health centers and our 242 clinics.
