Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Considering Community Rainwater Harvesting System to Replenish Groundwater

Bengaluru: BWSSB has thought of starting a community rainwater harvesting project to increase groundwater and fill lakes with rainwater. Installation of rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory in city buildings.

However, implementation is not possible due to lack of space in buildings and negligence. In most places, a rainwater harvesting system is installed only with necessary permission and rainwater is collected and discharged directly into the drainage system.

Due to this, the drainage system gets overwhelmed during the rainy season and floods occur. Also, precious water is wasted. Therefore, it has been decided to collect the precious rainwater and use it for groundwater augmentation for the community rain harvesting project, Dr. Ram Prasat Manohar, President of Jalamandal said.

He said that the board is thinking of implementing this scheme in Vartur and Bellandur in the first phase. Meanwhile, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath held a meeting with officials of the Yalahanka and Dasarahalli zones regarding the shortage of drinking water.

In the meeting, the officials of the corporation should coordinate with the Water Board officials, focus on the water problem, and take appropriate measures to provide a water system immediately.

Clean drinking water units should be kept active. A temporary water system should be provided for the units with water shortage and Sintex tank should be installed where water shortage is high.

Maintenance of tube wells and drilling of new tube wells have already been granted to both zones. He said that re-drilling of dry tube wells and new tube wells should be done and water arrangements should be made and how often the tankers deployed in the wards under the respective zones should be monitored to supply water.

Pump sets in dry borewells should be taken out and the machinery should be repaired if damaged and stored in one place. If the pump set breaks down in any borehole, the machines stored in the borehole should be installed immediately and water supplied.

Out of 110 villages coming under BBMP, 16 villages will come in the Yalahanka zone and 5 villages will come in the Dasarahalli zone. The corporation is providing water to these villages. He suggested that till the onset of monsoon, there should be no water problem anywhere.
