HMPV Detected in Bengaluru: What You Need to Know

Recently, two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported at Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital. The patients, a 3-month-old girl and an 8-month-old boy, were identified through routine respiratory virus surveillance conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This marks a significant step in monitoring respiratory illnesses across the country.

What Is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold, such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. It was first identified in 2001 and is now recognised as a major contributor to upper and lower respiratory tract infections. While most cases are mild, young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to severe complications.

How Does It Spread?

HMPV spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, respiratory droplets, or contaminated surfaces. The virus can easily infect people in close proximity, making it important to maintain good hygiene practices.

Symptoms and Prevention

Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, explained that HMPV presents like other respiratory viruses, causing flu-like symptoms. While most individuals recover without complications, it’s crucial to follow preventive measures, including:

Practising respiratory hygiene, such as covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Avoiding close contact with those showing symptoms of respiratory illness.

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces regularly.

Taking prescribed medications for fever and cold symptoms.

Current Situation in India

The Union Health Ministry has assured that India is prepared to manage respiratory illnesses, with robust surveillance mechanisms in place. Following reports of a rise in respiratory infections in China, the ministry has enhanced monitoring and engaged with the World Health Organisation (WHO) for updates.

According to officials, the current cases in India are not unusual for the flu season. Respiratory viruses like influenza, RSV, and HMPV are common during this period.

While HMPV generally leads to mild illnesses, vulnerable groups must take extra care to avoid exposure. Public awareness and adherence to health guidelines can significantly reduce the spread of the virus.

As India continues its efforts to monitor and mitigate respiratory illnesses, the focus remains on safeguarding public health through proactive measures and timely interventions.
