Peenya Flyover Set to Open for Heavy Vehicles, Aiming to Reduce Bangalore Traffic Jams

Peenya Flyover: Traffic police and National Highway Authority officials have finally given good news about reducing Bangalore’s traffic jams. By the end of this month, the Peenya flyover will be open for heavy vehicle traffic. However, the officials mentioned one condition. Read on to find out what it is.

Peenya Flyover Set to Open for Heavy Vehicles

Bengaluru, July 20: After nearly three years, the Peenya flyover will open for heavy vehicle traffic. Officials stated that the Peenya flyover will be open for heavy vehicles by the end of July, which will help reduce traffic congestion on Tumkur Road.

However, the authorities have informed us that heavy vehicles will be prohibited from using the flyover once a week (from 6 am on Friday to 6 am on Saturday) to prevent vibrations during the cement grouting work.

The 15-meter wide, 4.2-kilometer-long flyover has been restricted to buses and trucks since December 2021. This decision was made after an expert report indicated that the prestressed cables in three flyover spans were rusted and unsuitable for heavy vehicular traffic. As a result, traffic on the road below has been heavy, causing daily traffic jams.

A trial run was held in January

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) initiated a Rs 38.5-crore repair project in 2023 to add two additional cables in each span of the flyover and strengthen it. The flyover includes 240 prestressed cables with 120 spans. Load tests were conducted on the flyover in January.

Besides, 1,243 existing prestressed cables are being replaced to prevent future problems and corrosion, as a four-member expert committee recommended.

What did the authorities say?

The flyover will be open for heavy vehicles in the last week of July. We have submitted a report to the Highways Authority headquarters detailing the current site and traffic conditions.

“Deccan Herald” reported that KB Jayakumar, the project director of the NHAI Bangalore unit, said that the approval of the expert committee and the traffic police would be obtained early next week.

The flyover is being cleared for heavy vehicular traffic because it is fully reinforced. Prof. Chandra Kishan JM of the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), who heads the expert committee, said that for grouting to strengthen the existing 1,243 cables, there should be no vibration on the flyover for one day a week.

Heavy vehicles are not allowed to move on Fridays only

Jayakumar also said that the traffic police have instructed a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on Fridays. Usually, there is heavy traffic during weekends as people leave Bangalore. He mentioned that grouting takes 14-15 hours, plus some extra time for setting.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth confirmed that the NHAI has requested to ban heavy vehicles once a week.
