BBMP: Mobile notice for 6 lakh people who have not paid Property Tax in Bengaluru
Bengaluru, Nov 23: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to issue mobile notifications for property tax collection, targeting approximately six lakh individuals in the second phase. This move comes in response to homeowners attempting to transfer the responsibility of property tax payments to their tenants. The BBMP has initiated actions against property owners who neglect their property tax obligations.
In an innovative approach to tax collection, BBMP is experimenting with sending mobile notifications and WhatsApp messages to remind individuals of their tax arrears. Initially, mobile notices were dispatched to around 3.5 lakh recipients, and now an additional 6 lakh people have received these notifications. BBMP is actively sending notices to residents across eight zones, utilizing both mobile alerts and door-to-door communication. In cases where homeowners are absent, notices are being handed over to tenants.

Some property owners have attempted to evade tax payments by claiming that tenants who have resided for 8 to 10 years should be responsible for property tax. BBMP emphasizes that property tax is the responsibility of the person in whose name the property is registered and warns of legal consequences for non-compliance.
BBMP asserts that disciplinary measures will be taken against those failing to fulfill their property tax obligations. This proactive approach is aimed at preventing injustice to tenants and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
