Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line Electrification Begins: Public Warned to Stay Away from Tracks
Bangalore The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has accelerated work on the Metro Yellow Line, which will soon open for commercial traffic. With the arrival of bogies from China and the commencement of electrification on the route, BMRCL has issued an important public safety warning.
Testing and Electrification Underway
BMRCL is currently testing prototype coaches on the Yellow Line and completing any pending civil works. As part of these efforts, the tracks are being electrified. To ensure public safety during this crucial stage, BMRCL urges people to refrain from entering the viaducts (elevated sections) along the route unnecessarily.
High Voltage Warning
Operational metro trains run on 750 volts of direct current. BMRCL’s precautionary notice highlights the dangers associated with the ongoing high voltage electrification works on the Yellow Line. The high voltage cables supplying power to the tracks pose a significant risk to anyone entering the restricted areas.

Electrification Details
The electrification project involves laying 33 KV power cables along the viaduct from the BTM Layout station (Metro Reach-5) to the buffer end of RV Road station. This high voltage supply continues to Jayadeva Station, Ragigudda Station, and RV Road Station. BMRCL officials have strictly advised the public to stay away from these viaducts to avoid any potential accidents.
No Entry Without Permission
Construction of the 19 km stretch between RV Road and Bommasandra began in 2017 and is nearing completion. The final stages involve electrification and testing. The route will feature a total of 16 stations. BMRCL’s press release emphasizes that due to the presence of high voltage electricity, unauthorized entry onto the viaducts or the tracks is strictly prohibited.
Driverless Trains and Expected Timeline
The Yellow Line was initially targeted to open for public use by February 2024. However, delays in the supply of bogies from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the timeline. Notably, this route will be the first in Bengaluru to implement driverless metro trains. BMRCL is currently conducting necessary tests on the first set of trains received from China.
The Chinese company that secured the contract for supplying the bogies has begun production at their Chennai unit and is expected to deliver another set by December this year. By then, most of the testing and construction work should be finalized. With these developments, there is renewed optimism that public service on the Metro Yellow Line could commence by the end of 2024.
