Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line: A Game-Changer for Urban Commutes R V Road to Bommasandra via Electronics City

Bengaluru Metro is gearing up to change how the city moves, with the Yellow Line set to open soon. This 18-kilometre stretch will connect R V Road to Bommasandra via Electronics City, one of the city’s busiest IT hubs. What makes this project stand out is the introduction of India’s first fully indigenous driverless trainsets, a huge step forward for public transport in the country.

Bengaluru Yellow Line

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recently received its first trainset from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), built in West Bengal. This train, made entirely in India, reflects the success of the “Make in India” initiative. Equipped with advanced automation, these stainless steel trainsets are designed for driverless operations, making them both efficient and futuristic. Passengers can expect a safer, smoother, and more comfortable experience.

The Yellow Line is expected to begin operations by March or April 2025. To start, BMRCL plans to run with two trainsets—a prototype from China’s CRRC Corporation Ltd and the newly delivered train from TRSL. If a third train arrives by April as planned, the Metro will reduce the waiting time between trains to just 20 minutes.

The impact of the Yellow Line is expected to be massive, especially for those working in Electronics City. Daily commutes will become much faster and more reliable, reducing dependence on road transport and easing Bengaluru’s notorious traffic jams. This step will make life easier for thousands of tech professionals, students, and local residents who travel to and from this area.

Union Minister Manohar Lal, speaking at a virtual event, called this a milestone for India’s metro systems. He noted that the country now has over 1,000 kilometres of operational metro lines and is set to surpass the United States in the near future. This achievement highlights the progress India is making in modern transport infrastructure.

The trainsets are built to meet global standards while being eco-friendly. They consume less power and offer advanced safety features, such as improved braking systems and smart sensors. The interiors are modern, spacious, and designed with passenger comfort in mind. By September 2025, TRSL aims to ramp up production, delivering two trainsets each month to support the Yellow Line’s operations.

While the project is advancing rapidly, it’s not just about new trains. This initiative is also creating opportunities for Indian manufacturers to establish themselves in global markets. TRSL’s Managing Director, Umesh Chowdhary, emphasised the importance of building state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India, aligning with the government’s vision of self-reliance. These developments not only strengthen the country’s industrial base but also reduce dependence on imported technology.

The collaboration between TRSL and CRRC Corporation Ltd has been key to making this project a reality. Together, they are delivering advanced rolling stock for Bengaluru Metro, including 90 coaches for the Yellow Line. This combination of international expertise and local manufacturing is setting a benchmark for future projects across India.

As the Yellow Line prepares to roll out, the excitement is building. This addition to Bengaluru Metro promises to bring quicker commutes, better connectivity, and a more modern travel experience. For a city constantly on the move, this is a big step forward, reducing traffic pressure and making public transport a more attractive option for everyone.
