Bangalore: Despite the completion of the purple line in October 2023, BMRCL faced a two-month delay in realizing the projected revenue. Presently, the metro hasn’t reached the anticipated daily average of 7 lakh passengers, but December’s uptick in ridership, likely due to Christmas and New Year, is promising.

December saw a historic high of 2,13,34,076 metro users, surpassing November’s 1,99,21,460 riders. Each day, an average of 6,88,196 passengers utilized the metro. On December 31 alone, 6.26 lakh people traveled, resulting in a revenue of ₹1.64 crore.

BMRCL officials project that the daily average ridership is poised to reach 7 lakh in January. In the same month last year, the monthly average was 5.30 lakh passengers, showcasing a remarkable increase of over 64 thousand daily passengers at present.

Expectations were set for a surge of 75,000 to 1 lakh passengers with the extension of the purple route from Baiyappanahalli to KR Puram (2.1 km) and Kengeri to Challaghatta (2.05 km), which commenced full operations in October. However, BMRCL officials attribute the shortfall to a shortage of coaches.
