Managing Director for Bengaluru Metro: Central Government Appoints M. Maheshwar Rao as Full-Time Managing Director for Bengaluru Metro (BMRCL).

Bengaluru (January 11): After a prolonged period, the Central Government has appointed senior IAS officer M. Maheshwar Rao to lead the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), as per an official order.

Recently, Bengaluru South MP Tejaswi Surya expressed concerns during a press conference about delays in the Metro Phase-2 project, citing the absence of a full-time Development Director as a key contributing factor. Surya emphasized the need for a cohesive leader for BMRCL, a vital public transport entity.

Following Surya’s plea to Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, seeking urgent intervention to expedite Metro Phase-II works and appoint a full-time MD, the Central Government responded by appointing Maheshwar Rao, a senior IAS officer from the 1995 batch, as the Whole Time Managing Director of BMRCL. MP Tejaswi Surya expressed satisfaction and gratitude towards the Union Minister for the prompt action.

Following the sanction conditions of the Bengaluru Metro Rail project, the full-time Managing Director can only be transferred with prior approval from the Central Government. The order explicitly states that the Karnataka State Government is prohibited from assigning any other or additional responsibilities to the Managing Director without prior approval from the Ministry.
